Our Lady Theotokos of Kazan with Jesus
Sacred image, depicting the face of the Virgin Mary turning tenderly to Her Son, who is standing and blessing. Also known as the "Virgin of Kazan" or "The Black Virgin of Kazan", she holds a prominent position in the Russian Orthodox Church.
According to Holy Tradition, it was discovered on July 8, 1579 in the city of Kazan in Russia (now the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan) by a young girl named Matrona. The incident happened a few years after the conquest of this Tatar city by Ivan IV the Terrible (1552). The icon was kept in the Monastery of the Virgin of Kazan, which was built on the spot where it was found, until November 29, 1904, when it was stolen.
The thieves apparently noticed the gold frame, which was adorned with precious stones. Years later, the police arrested the perpetrators and discovered the picture frame of inestimable value, but not the image, which must be considered lost forever, since in their apology the thieves claimed that they cut it and burned it.
The Russian Church has interpreted the destruction of the image as a bad omen and as a source of suffering for Russia. Ordinary religious people associated its destruction with the Revolution of 1905, the defeat of Russia in the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905) and the October Revolution (1917).
The rumor that after the October Revolution the Bolsheviks sold it abroad proved to be non-existent. However, a replica of Our Lady of Kazan was circulating in Leningrad during the German siege of the city (1941-1944), in order to raise the morale of the Soviet soldiers. The intercession of Our Lady of Kazan was invoked, among others, by Russian generals Dmitry Pozarski and Mikhail Kutuzov, to help the country expel the Polish invaders in 1612 and Napoleon's French in 1812.
There are more than sixty copies of Our Lady of Kazan, many of which are considered miraculous. A copy, dating from 1730, was obtained in the 1970s from a pilgrimage to the village of Fatima in Portugal (The Miracle of Fatima) and transported to the Vatican in 1993. Pope John Paul II prayed for 11 years in the icon , having said that Our Lady of Kazan "found a home and accompanies me with her motherly gaze in my daily ecclesiastical duties".
A replica of the Virgin of Kazan, of great artistic value, is kept in the Russian Monastery of St. Panteleimon on Mount Athos. In Greece, copies of the Virgin of Kazan exist in the Katholikon of the Holy Monastery of the Virgin (Keratea), in the chapel of Osia Xeni of Russia (Mandra, Attica) and in the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin in Kallithea, Attica.
Our Lady of Kazan is the patron saint of Kazan and protector of Russia. It is celebrated on July 8 and November 4, a day when Russia celebrates National Unity Day. Traditionally, engagements in Russia are blessed with the image of Our Lady of Kazan. Temples in honor of Our Lady of Kazan have been built in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
